Selecting Dust Mops (doc)

Selecting the Proper Dust Mop for your Needs

Looped End:

Looped end construction helps eliminate linting and fraying. With no loose ends, mops last longer, withstand laundering and are far less vulnerable to tangling and deterioration in the laundry. Golden Star's Infinity Twist yarn takes looped end performance a step further by tightly twisting the looped ends all the way up to the backing through a patented process. This allows dirt to wick up to the backing. This unique yarn construction eliminates crushing and matting down. Performance is greatly enhanced.

Cut End:

This traditional style works well in all but the most demanding situations, especially when sewn rather than tufted. Though more economical in its initial cost, a cut end style dust mop is not designed to be laundered or to withstand rigorous use. It tends to unravel, fray, lint and mat down during use. These problems shorten mop life and decrease performance.

Backing:

Mildew resistant, synthetic backing is stronger and more abrasion resistant than canvas. It is non-absorbent and is less likely to become discolored or stained. Non-absorbent backings dry faster for energy conservation. Since it will not hold treatment, all dust mop treatment remains in the mop yarn where actual cleaning is taking place.

Yarn Types

MicroFiber:
Engineered to aggressively collect dust, the microfiber filament fibers and looped ends allow for the pick-up of very small or micro particles that ordinary mops will leave behind. Can be laundered over 200 times and NEVER require the use if dust mop treatments.

Cotton:

Cotton fiber remains the most effective yarn for collecting and retaining dust and particle matter. Studies have shown that nylon and rayon are not as effective as cotton for dust control since they do not have the same capacities for wicking or absorbing treatment.

Synthetics:

Synthetic fibers pick up dust by attraction, eliminating the need for dust mop treatments. Can be laundered over 100 times and NEVER require the use if dust mop treatments.

Synthetic backing material has replaced cotton as the industry standard because it dries much faster and absorbs less treatment than cotton.

Dust Mop Treatment:

Treatments – Top of the line treatments consist of a paraffin-based substance to attract and retain dust and to also prevent creating a slippery surface. Properly treated dust mops have been proven twice as effective as untreated tools. That is the reason properly treated dust mops are widely recognized as the most efficient and least costly of dust control methods available. Daily brushing out and occasional re-treatment is usually sufficient to obtain maximum performance.

For retreating, use one ounce for every foot of dust mop. Before use, a minimum curing time of eight hours is recommended. When chemical treatment is not appropriate, choose a mop that picks up by static attraction making treatment unnecessary.
